I thought it was cute that we had to call and talk to each other during the process. Hard work like this really is more fun with some chatter.

And I do think these are important skills. I forgot to tell you the story of trying to walk out of wal-mart with all my jars. The lady checking receipts stopped me, but didn't even want to see my receipts. She wanted to know what I was canning, if I'd done any canning before, where I got the recipes I was using. We chatted for a few minutes and then someone else needed her attention, but I thought it was really cute. Few people do this anymore (gardeners as the last stubborn bastion?), so it seems to make people excited and talkative.

I think the key to this rationale regarding grocery/garden is that you know you are able, if you value it enough, to do the gardening yourself. I have a pitiful little bucket with cukes and grape tomatoes.

A couple of years ago I had a similar bucket and there were way too many tomatoes to eat from one plant. This year, one pitiful grape tomatoe at a time. Of course maybe they are waiting for the cukes to hit their stride.

I will miss the farmer's market because I have to work Saturday this week, but will be back there next weekend. I decided that whichever one I go to, I will take $20 cash and we get what we get.

Back to contemplating a shift toward a more veg heavy menu. This post certainly inspires!

Actually, that sounds about right. The haul pictured there was about $40 (I also bought three reusable shopping bags not pictured, otherwise it would have been more like $30). I consider the prices fair, since most of these folks are still using gasoline driven equipment. Most weeks I spend closer to $20, but I don't come home with nearly as much. I think the next few weeks and the first few of August I'm going to buy a lot and try to freeze/can a bit more than I have in previous years. I love diced tomatoes, use them all the time, and I'd like to try canning my own this year. There's also some pickles I'm contemplating.

I got totally spoiled by a CSA that delivered when my school schedule made it impossible for me to make their pickup. It was so cool coming home and having veggies on the porch. I was actually reading a NY Times article yesterday talking about having hired gardeners so you can have homegrown veggies without having to do the garden work. As bizarre as it sounds, I thought it was a really cool business niche. I can't even explain to you why it seems perfectly normal to me to go to the grocery and pay for someone else's work, but it seems odd and extravagant to pay someone to come work a garden for me. Any ideas?

I am so ready to join a CSA here in Houston, but alas, I must wait until they grow enough that they deliver to my area.

There are several local farmer's markets which we attend, but I have a hard time with the costs. To get as much as you pictured, I would be spending about $50.

We fortunately do have a costly alternative. There is another farmer's market association which is not costly at all. It isn't local, but it does support a lot of migrant workers with most of the produce being imported from Mexico and other Central American countries. About $20 for produce for the week.

I am looking forward to the eventual CSA home delivery immensely.
